Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the latest installment in Ubisoft’s renowned franchise, transports players to feudal Japan with stunning detail. The development process involved extensive research and close collaboration between the creative team and historians to ensure cultural authenticity. Creative Director Jonathan Dumont emphasized the importance of a respectful approach in bringing this historical period to life, focusing on accuracy and honoring Japanese culture.
One of the main challenges in developing Assassin’s Creed Shadows was creating a dynamic and realistic open world. The development team used the Anvil game engine to build detailed 3D environments, allowing for an authentic representation of feudal Japanese architecture and landscapes. Pierre Fortin, the game’s technical architect, explained that cross-disciplinary collaboration between designers, artists, and engineers was crucial in realizing this vision.
Additionally, Assassin’s Creed Shadows introduces two protagonists with distinct backgrounds and gameplay styles: Yasuke, a samurai, and Naoe, a shinobi. This approach provides a rich gameplay variety and allows players to experience different perspectives in the game’s narrative. Game Director Benoit stated that the decision to include two main characters aimed to explore the duality between samurai and shinobi while enhancing the player’s experience in exploring feudal Japan.
